Europe on $5.00 a Day in the 1960's
I traveled alone for 4 1/2 months in Europe in 1966. My Eurorail pass for 3 months was $108. With the Frommer and Harvard guides saying I could spend only $5.00 a day and that is precisely what I did. My food, housing, local transportation, whatever was $5.00 a day. I recorded daily expenses in a small notebook. When the tally amounted to $5.00, I would go to my housing and soon go to bed. Every $5.00 was another travel day for me.
In 1972 my husband and I traveled frugally around the world for 13 months with backpacks carrying our gear. It was absolutely fabulous!! The total tally for the entire 13 months, ALL expenses included, was $13,000 for the 2 of us!!!! Pretty astounding when I see current tour trips charge 1/3 our total costs for one 2 week trip.!!!!!
Needless to say, I love to travel long or short trips now at age 74, as long as I can. My beloved husband died 9 years ago at 67 yrs old. I miss him. And I still keep traveling alone or with friends. I sincerely encourage everyone to travel. It changes us in many ways.
And it is always adventure!!!!
More to come in later posts.....,

What is World Refugee Day about?
A big misconception? Refugees choose to come to America.
That couldn’t be farther from the truth. In fact, most refugees did not have a choice in their relocation to America.

Sandy, thank you for sharing your reminiscences and for encouraging that we step out into the world. I love wisdom from our peers and even more from our elders. Thanks for showing the way on our journeys!
